Michel Foucault, French philosopher, social theorist, and historian of ideas was best known for his critical studies of social institutions, psychiatry, social anthropology of medicine, the human sciences, and the prison system.


Foucault died in Paris of neurological problems caused by the HIV/AIDS virus. He was the first famous figure in France to have died from the virus. His partner Daniel Defert  founded first national AIDS organisation in France, which he called AIDES.
